How to Prepare for Your Makeup & Hair Appointment | Cody Makeup

Prep Before Makeup

Leading into the event…

  1. Consistent skin care leading into the event, at a minimum, cleanse and moisturise every day. For best results, a eye cream, lip balm or mask, and serum should also be used.

  2. Exfoliate the face the night before the event. For best results I recommend a chemical exfoliant - my personal favourite is the Dr Dennis Gross Peel Pads as they have a step 2 neutraliser.
*Please do not try new skin care the week of your appointment if you haven’t used active ingredients before

  3. All facial waxing or threading should be done 7 days before the event to allow skin to calm and prevent risk of reaction.

  4. If using fake tanning, this should be done 1-2 days before the event. I always recommend having a light layer of the tan on the face.

  5. Lash lifts should be avoided if you want to have false lashes applied, both strip and individual lashes do not sit well on lash lifts, a lash curler can always be used on the day.

  6. Drink plenty of water! Hydration makes a big difference in how plump and glowy your skin looks.
    * 2-4L per day depending on your size

The day of the appointment…

  1. Cleanse and moisturise, do not apply any makeup, primers or SPF prior to your appointment.

  2. Have your teeth brushed and contacts in (if you wear them), to avoid messing up the makeup.

  3. Wear a top that is easy to change out of (a wide neck, button down, zip up). Avoid completely covering up the decolletage area for best colour matching.

  4. Bring inspiration photos or come prepared with an idea of what you’d like. This could be colours, how heavy or natural you prefer, or simply the kind of feeling you want - pretty and soft, smokey and sultry, radiant and glowing, etc.
    * Even if I’ve done your makeup before, please share details of what you’d like again, as I don’t keep records (except for bridal trials).

  5. Please avoid going on your phone while I am applying the makeup, I understand certain circumstances but this can extend the appointment time.

  6. I want you to feel the best you can! It is okay to have personal preferences and communication is key, please do not hesitate to ask if you would like something to be added or changed.

After the appointment…

  1. Avoid touching the face as much as you can for best results. Light tapping can be okay if needed.

  2. Drinking from a straw and cutting food into small bite size pieces is best to keep lipstick in place, but having a top up lipstick/gloss/liner is always my number one touch up product to have on you.

  3. If you are oily, blotting paper is a great way to remove shine without changing the makeup. Alternatively a setting powder such as the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finishing Powder is a great lightweight powder to remove shine without adding bulk.

  4. If there are tears at your event, catch them with a folded tissue, gently patting instead of wiping.

Prep Before Hairstyling

Leading into the event…

  1. Have your hair cut/colour booked in for the week before the event if needed.

  2. If you are planning to have face framing pieces these need to be cut into the hair before the appointment, especially for an upstyle consider how thick you would like the hair to be that is left out.

  3. Consider if you require hair extensions for length or fullness, clip ins rather than wefts are great for events as they can be placed where necessary to be hidden. There are so many options, when purchasing, make sure to check if the extensions can be heat styled.
*Extensions may require extra time. Please email me in advance if you plan on using them

  4. If you have dry or dull hair a hydrating mask the week before would be recommended.

The day of the appointment…

  1. Wash your hair within 24 hours of the appointment, freshly washed hair is always better than dirty hair. I can use products to add grip and texture if needed.

  2. Double Shampoo is recommended to ensure hair is clean, follow with conditioner based on your hair type. Rinse thoroughly ensuring all conditioner is washed out.
    * Clarifying shampoos are great to remove build up!

  3. Blow dry hair after towel drying to smooth the cuticle, avoid using hot tools. If you have naturally curly hair & want to keep your natural curls, please dry hair as per your usual curly-hair method.

  4. Do not use any hairsprays, oils or leave in treatments prior to your appointment.

  5. Wear a top that is easy to change out of (a wide neck, button down, zip up).

  6. Bring your inspiration photos and ideas, these can also be emailed before the appointment. Also be aware of how your hair behaves (does it hold well, drop, get knotty or tend to go frizzy?)

  7. If you have hair accessories also bring these to the appointment.

After the appointment…

  1. Be mindful when touching your hair, leaning against chairs, or getting changed.

  2. Depending on the style, carrying a small comb can help refresh curls/waves if needed throughout the event.

  3. Be gentle or have someone help if you are removing or changing a hair accessory.
